So, I'm pretty stoked! Right now I am on a bus with other Founders and startup enthusiasts on our way to Montreal for one of the largest startup events in the country: the International Startup Festival.
I've been trying to get to StarupFest for the past two years but things just didn't line up. I was thinking somehow incorporating this experience in to Mashup Lab incubation programming (some REALY exciting news to share on that front later this week ... stay tuned!!). But, I'm a bit of a control freak - and I like to 'practice what I preach’ - so I wanted to check this thing out for myself.
The speaker lineup looks top notch, very much a 'Founder to Founder' vibe, which I love. I’m intrigued by the Grandmother's Choice Award - they get startups to pitch their idea to a judging panel made up of Grandmother, who pick their favourite pitch! This is serious stuff...two years ago the Grandmothers’ top pick was Onavo, who was later bought by Facebook for somewhere north of $150-million! These Grandmas are no joke.
Tomorrow I will be hanging out with other organizers of startup incubation / acceleration programs from across the country at Accelerator Fest: a full day with the Founders and Directors of some of the top incubator and accelerator programs in the world. Mind. Blown. Already.
I thought I’d take in the full startup experience on this trip. So instead of staying at a chain hotel, I will be stay at the newly launched Startup BaseCamp Montreal. This is a co-living space for startup entrepreneurs in downtown Montreal. I will be bunking up with the Founder of company (yeah, I know, pretty awesome, right!?!), and two other startup Founders that are attending the Festival.
Needless to say, I am in my element! I can feel my energy building already … and so far I’ve mostly just been sitting a bus. Can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings!
I’ll be “live-ish” tweeting from @mashup_LAB, so feel free to follow the action there. I’ll be sure to let you in on all the interesting, innovative, and inspiring things I see this week! PUMPED!
Working with over 1,000 Entrepreneurs starting and growing businesses from rural communities gives you perspective. Here is where I share the things I'm learning through my work with Mashup Lab. This is my Rural Perspective; I'd love to hear yours.
